Have you ever wondered how the process from fresh fish to finished omega-3 capsules works? Founder and technical director, Hogne Hallaråker, tells us more about the production process at Romega.
Fresh herring roe from the Norwegian coast
Romega is a roe extract from Norwegian spring-spawning herring. The herring is fished along the Norwegian coast, and large parts are collected just outside Møre. We cooperate with several fish reception centers and are lucky to have fish reception centers near Ørsta. Here we are talking about short-distance fished herring.

To ensure that the roe quality is good, we are always present at the fish reception when the herring catch comes in. We take regular samples, where we examine the water, the oil, the color and the size of the roe grains. During the fishing season, we harvest many hundreds of tons of roe. These are frozen in 20 kg blocks that are stored in a cold room nearby.

Gentle processing of the raw material
The oil from herring roe is extracted through a process that we have developed ourselves in Ørsta. This is a very gentle process where we constantly ensure that the product does not come into contact with oxygen or unnecessary heat. We do this to keep the oil in Romega as fresh as possible.
We fill the finished oil into barrels which we then send to our capsule manufacturer. This manufacturer also makes the finished packaging with Romega, which is designed in Ørsta. The packaging is then sent out to our customers all over Norway.
There is an exciting entrepreneurial story behind Romega. The process from oil to finished capsules has been a long one. Read more about what gave Hogne Hallaråker the idea for Romega and his experiences as an entrepreneur.
