The science behind the production of herring roe extract
Herring roe extract does not behave like typical fish oils, so a completely different method is needed to process the raw material herring roe. If you use classical techniques to extract the fat fraction from the roe, you are left with a viscous paste that is difficult to remove from the processing equipment. Thanks to the clever minds at the Ørsta laboratory, we found a new method to extract the fats in a way that avoided this problem.
Patented production process
This very gentle method of extracting the fats from the roe was so effective that we decided to patent it. All Romega is therefore manufactured using our own proprietary and patented production process, which sets us apart from many other manufacturers and wholesalers in the omega-3 market. After optimizing the production process, we were free to continue researching the health benefits of herring roe extract.
Study on the absorption of fatty acids from herring roe
A pilot project conducted together with the University of Bergen showed that herring roe extract increases levels of important omega-3 fatty acids in the body 1. This study showed that fatty acids from herring roe extract enter the human bloodstream.
Herring roe oil is made into capsules
Before this study, we had only sold the oil in large 45-kilogram drums to overseas customers, who used it in their own products and as an ingredient in established products. Now we could finally offer the product in small capsules.
A brand is created
Based on the study results and the positive feedback we received from our customers abroad, we launched our own dietary supplement in Norway. We gave it the brand name Romega® – A result of world-class research.
