Are you wondering how Romega came to be? The founder, Hogne Hallaråker, tells in his own words what was the basis for the idea of a dietary supplement based on fish roe.
The idea for Romega was born from fish larvae
When I started this journey and founded Arctic Nutrition in 2011 together with Jan Rammereit and Harald Nordal in Ørsta, it was based on very interesting results I had previously obtained in experiments with omega-3 phospholipids and marine fish larvae.
The key lies in omega-3 phospholipids
During the development of halibut production, we saw that these larvae often had problems with incorrect development of the skeleton, eyes, color and behavior. The experiments showed that the incorrect development in these larvae was reduced by over 90% when we added a product, which we had developed in the laboratory in Hovdebygda, to the food given to these larvae.
The only difference in the food was that the fat we added was rich in omega-3 bound in a special form called phospholipids. Previously, only regular omega-3 from triglycerides had been used.
Phospholipids are found naturally in the human body
Phospholipids are a very important component of all cell membranes in both animals and plants. It is important that the quality of the membrane is good so that nutrients, waste products and gases can pass in and out of the cell in a good way. The key to good function lies in the fact that the right fatty acids, called DHA and EPA, are directly bound in the phospholipid, which we also find in the cell membrane.
These phospholipids, which are found in large quantities in fish roe, are ideal for fish and fish larvae. The question then became, are they equally useful for other animals and humans? The answer is yes, and here you can read more about our experiences with omega-3 from herring roe.
