The world's most sustainable fish resource
In the cold, clean waters of Norway we find herring – a fish species that not only thrives in the North Atlantic, but is also considered one of the world’s most sustainable fish resources. The unique herring roe we use is MSC certified and comes from herring caught by local fisheries in Sunnmøre, representing the ultimate in Norwegian quality and sustainability.
Herring is a treasure trove of important nutrients for our bodies. From the herring we extract oil from the roe. Herring roe oil is a rich source of the important omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, along with a range of other beneficial nutrients.
The process of extracting oil from herring roe is complex and labor-intensive. At Arctic Bioscience, we have developed methods through groundbreaking research to isolate these valuable nutrients.
Herring as food and nutrition is deeply rooted in Norwegian culture and tradition. Today, it is on its way to becoming a sought-after component of modern nutrition.

But what makes herring roe oil so special?
Herring oil differs from other omega-3 sources in its unique composition of fatty acids and nutrients. It contains not only EPA and DHA, which are important for the heart, brain and vision*, but also phospholipids, which are part of the structure and function of cell membranes and promote higher bioavailability with faster absorption in the body than regular fish oils**.
Furthermore, the important nutrient choline occurs naturally in herring roe. It is an important nutrient that protects vital organs such as the liver and heart***.
Herring roe oil's unique nutritional profile makes it a valuable supplement for people of all ages. It has a special composition of various nutrients that is now receiving increased attention and research support in research environments. Herring roe oil also contains ketolinic acid, a fatty acid with health-promoting properties. Research from the food research institute Nofima shows that ketolinic acid stimulates our cells to convert short-chain omega-3 fatty acids into healthy, long-chain marine omega-3 fatty acids.
Additionally, herring roe oil contains specialized lipid mediators, known as SPMs. SPMs are the result of omega-3 conversion in the body, and studies suggest that they may play an important role in regulating inflammatory responses in the body. Read more about our research at:
